About Volunteering

Over 300 volunteers offer their services to us on a regular basis.

Volunteers work alongside our paid staff and offer their skills, experience and expertise to every department within the Hospice.

The work our volunteers do for us contributes enormously to the range of services we can offer patients and families; without them we could not achieve all that we do.

When asked what does being a Volunteer really involve, Josie Town, reception volunteer and Trustee replied “When someone asks me what I do and I say I support Volunteers at the Mary Ann Evans Hospice, there is usually a pause and then a question ‘What sort of things do Volunteers do?’ This is not a question with a short answer. People are often amazed to hear the diversity of support, some volunteer on a regular basis and some as a short term project or a ‘one off’ job.

Volunteers help in the Day Hospice, in the Hospice Shops, in the Fundraising Department and at fundraising events. Volunteers also transport Patients to and from the Hospice as well as driving the Hospice minibus and help in the garden and offer bereavement support.

By donating ‘time and effort’ the volunteers have saved the Mary Ann Evans Hospice the magnificent sum of approximately £100,000. Jackie has been a volunteer since she retired and like a lot of volunteers she gets much satisfaction from donating her time.

Jackie said,“ I thoroughly enjoy the time I spend at the Hospice, as I find it a very welcoming place. All the staff and patients are so friendly that I feel part of a large extended family.”

Why Volunteer?

Some find the experience and confidence they gain from working at the Mary Ann Evans Hospice a useful stepping stone on the way to a rewarding career. Others bring us a range of different life experiences which enhance the work of the Hospice. By volunteering you can learn new skills, make new friends and achieve satisfaction from giving something back.
