A Respectable Event
10th May 2019 @ 7:00 pm£40.00 - £400.00
The humdrum chatter bounced off the walls. The atmosphere was alive with mischief. Smoke and clatter permeated through cool, calm, collected thoughts. A stranger waited in the shadows. Their face briefly illuminated by the crack of a match and the fizzle of sulfur. They sucked in on gaunt cheeks and swallowed in a cloud of blueish smoke. Tapered fingers sleeked over slick hair. No mussing. A cap shoved on calmly, with the reverence of a colonel.
A car roared around the corner and the headlights illuminated a drab alleyway, with plenty of shadows in which to hide the debauchery of the city.
‘Things have certainly gone down in the city since the war’, our stranger pondered, musing silently on the stench of decay that strained through the air.
“Get in.” Bluntly roared the driver, of the gleaming machine, parked askew, hurried and by a half-human short of patience and long of horrors. “We’ve got a job to do.”
A grunt and a shift and the door heaved shut. There was coolness to the leather on their woollen overcoat. Spats shuffled and squeaked against the wet floor and the car hummed ever onwards. The craven industry and brick gave way to something more peaceful and angelic. Meadows blurred past as tyres rolled along dirt paths. The stranger allowed thoughts to blur with the meadows. The rain was light and refreshing.
“We’re here.” The stranger bolted back to life and everything returned into sharp focus. “That’s the problem with you who came back from it; you left your life there.” Now everything was in sharp relief, our stranger found themselves staring at a glittering building. The building was something out of a movie picture, thought our stranger. There were words on giant letters, gleaming with neon buzz, ‘GRACE’S SECRET’. You could hear the music roaring and the shrieks of pure delight. ‘This is it’ they thought, ‘this is the Jazz Age.’ Just before they could be lost in reverie the doors boomed open and the atmosphere gushed out.
A man in a white tuxedo jacket with a well-groomed moustache boomed “This is a respectable event!”
